I collect these posts as evidence of Shopify’s reported sales scale and my optimism about the platform, while keeping other people’s quoted claims distinct from my own. The figures below were reported by @tobi or @harleyf; they are not results I independently verified. My broader positive view connects to praise and optimism for shopify.
On November 30, 2024, I reacted to @tobi’s account of Shopify’s record-breaking Black Friday with “$5 billion day.” @tobi reported $5 billion in merchant Black Friday sales (GMV), a peak of $4.6 million in sales per minute the previous day, more than 173B egress requests, and 284 million requests per minute at the edge. App servers handled more than 80 million requests per minute while pushing 12TB a minute; database queries peaked at 45 million per second and writes at 7.6 million per second. @tobi also said Shopify relies on Kafka, but the quoted text cuts off after “At peak we hit,” so it supplies no Kafka result. The post does not specify the calendar date meant by “yesterday” or explain how the systems were operated.
On November 29, 2025, I wrote “Ecom is dying” while quoting @tobi’s Black Friday update. @tobi reported $6.2 billion in merchant sales, up 25% year over year; 489 million edge requests per minute; and 117 million requests per minute on app servers, up 40% from the prior year. The post also reported 237 billion egress requests, peak database queries of over 53 million per second, writes of over 2 million per second, and more than 31 million API requests per minute at peak. I did not explain what my “Ecom is dying” remark referred to or how it related to those figures.
On November 30, 2025, I wrote, “True and also inflation. Nevertheless, Shopify is booming.” I was agreeing with prior context that is not captured here, so what “True” affirmed is unclear. I also quoted @surfinmars24’s claim that legacy brands switched to Shopify during the year and that those switches explained rising numbers; that explanation belongs to @surfinmars24, and my post did not identify the brands or numbers.
On May 5, 2026, I posted “Ecom season” while quoting @harleyf. The Q1 results and business outlook in the quotation were @harleyf’s claims: Shopify merchant sales were $101B, a second consecutive quarter above $100B and up 35% year over year; revenue was $3.2B, up 34% year over year; and free cash flow was $476M with a 15% margin. @harleyf described the results as evidence of “a clear strategy, well executed” and said AI will accelerate entrepreneurship more than any other job. I did not present these figures or claims as my own. The AI entrepreneurship outlook relates to ecommerce s ai golden age.
