# Allo Inventory Reservation System

I built Allo Inventory, a TypeScript inventory reservation system for multi-warehouse retail, in the Allo_Project repository on my GitHub: https://github.com/tejasnaikj/Allo_Project. It temporarily holds stock during checkout to prevent overselling. The project started in 2026-05 and was last updated in 2026-05.

I chose lazy expiry to avoid the infrastructure complexity of background workers or cron jobs. Reservations expire after 10 minutes. On every `GET /api/products` request, I release expired pending reservations and decrement `reservedUnits`, making that stock available again the next time products are fetched. Expired stock is not freed immediately if no product fetch occurs.

To prevent overselling when reservation requests compete for stock, `POST /api/reservations` uses Postgres `SELECT FOR UPDATE` inside a `db.$transaction` block. The transaction locks the inventory row; when simultaneous requests compete for the last unit, one waits, then sees 0 available stock and returns a 409.

- I have not implemented idempotency keys, so retried requests could create duplicate reservations.

To run the project locally, I clone the repository, install dependencies, configure `DATABASE_URL` and `REDIS_URL` in `.env`, run Prisma migrations and the seed script, then start the development server.

```
git clone https://github.com/tejasnaikj/Allo_Project.git
cd Allo_Project
npm install
# Create .env with DATABASE_URL and REDIS_URL
npx prisma migrate dev
npm run seed
npm run dev
```

- I have not implemented authentication, so any user can confirm or release any reservation by ID.
- The frontend error messages could be more user-friendly.
- Open design questions include whether to add a cron job or background worker for more timely expiry, whether to add idempotency keys and authorization, and whether to improve frontend errors.
