I understand Test-Time Compute, also called inference-time scaling, as giving a model additional computational power while it is generating an answer. Rather than relying only on what it learned during training, the model can improve its reasoning at runtime.
- I can apply extra computation to work through complex problems, evaluate multiple possible solutions, and refine an answer before responding.
OpenAI o3 is an example: it uses extended reasoning to solve complex mathematical, scientific, and coding problems.
The captured explanation gives no quantitative results or benchmarks, so I treat the benefits as qualitative rather than measured claims.
- The aim is deeper reasoning, better problem-solving, and more reliable outputs without necessarily increasing model size.
