# Foundation Models Reshaping Annotation

I observed that “there are more than half a million of the models out there and it will cross few millions in a few months”.

I decided to use large language models for offline data labeling to avoid real‑time latency and cost while still benefiting from LLM accuracy.

I insert an intermediate human review step to catch hallucinations and ensure privacy compliance.

- Create a concise system prompt defining the labeling schema, output format, and domain constraints.

I noted that large generative models now understand complex instructions and can perform diverse tasks, unlocking cost‑effective, high‑quality annotation for many business use cases.

I also highlighted the need to mitigate risks such as cost, latency, hallucinations, privacy, and ethical considerations.

- Standardize input data (JSON lines, CSV) and batch it to respect token limits and cost budgets.
- Implement a review pipeline (UI for annotators, validation scripts) to flag inconsistent or sensitive responses.

I introduced VRP‑SAM, which uses a single visual reference mask to drive segmentation of the same class across many images. "However with VRP‑SAM: SAM with Visual Reference Prompt, you only need to provide one image and its mask annotation for the specific class."

I posted on 2024‑05‑28 that careful data curation and high‑quality human annotation are the key “last‑mile accuracy” drivers for fine‑tuning foundation models. I argued that most companies should not build proprietary data‑engine infrastructure like Meta, but instead integrate external high‑quality data‑curation vendors such as LabelerR, SuperAnnotate, Labelbox, and V7 Labs into their pipelines.

I observed that data labeling has been the most boring part of building computer‑vision AI systems and a major drag on speed, experimentation, and momentum.

I decided to open‑source a SAM3 reference pipeline built for teams who want to train custom vision systems with confidence, privacy by default, and a workflow that can be debugged and strengthened over time.
