# Handling Uncertainty In System Failures

I learned to distinguish an inconclusive queue read from an empty queue and from a failed check. When a read cannot establish the queue state, the honest status is unknown and should be retried on the next run.

My AI visibility check worker reads its queue every few minutes.

The queue read kept breaking mid-response: the connection dropped before it could say whether any check was waiting.

No check was lost or half-processed, because every failure happened before a check even started.

I concluded that the failures were transport noise, not lost work, because the runs in between kept succeeding and every successful read said the queue was empty.

I judged that treating 'unknown' as 'nothing' would be dishonest, while treating it as a disaster would be panic.

The honest answer was 'unknown, retry next run' — and the next run usually answered it.
