# Github Copilot Data Retention

GitHub Copilot handles user data according to the access mode (IDE chat vs. other code completions). The service acts as a data controller and its practices are outlined in the GitHub Terms of Service and the GitHub Privacy Statement.

User Engagement Data: Kept for two years.

Prompts and Suggestions: Not retained (IDE chat).

Prompts and Suggestions: Retained for 28 days (all other access).

Feedback Data: Stored for as long as needed for its intended purpose.

Matching-code filter threshold: 65 lexemes or more (on average, 150 characters).

Copyright‑matching incidence: less than 1% of suggestions may match training‑code examples.

GitHub does not claim ownership of any suggestion.
