On 2023-07-24, I shared a quotation attributed to Fernando Pessoa’s The Book of Disquiet: “If you can't live alone, you were born a slave.” The quoted speaker argues that even someone with “all the splendours of the mind and the soul” is not free if they cannot live alone, describing such a person as a “noble slave” or “intelligent servant.” This is Pessoa’s attributed view, not a position I stated as my own. It sits alongside reflections on wisdom for life s ups and downs.
