Targeted Applications Beat Mass Applying

From x.com/nehakathare

I observed that a recruiter rejected my resume because 200 other applicants used the exact same generic line, and the recruiter only spends about 6 seconds per resume.

Competing generic resumes = 200.

Recruiter time per resume = 6 seconds.

The market isn't broken.

Most applicants are applying to jobs, not solving the hiring manager's actual problem in their pitch.

Sending 200 applications isn't a job search strategy. It's a way to feel busy while avoiding the 20 direct messages that would actually work.

Sending 200 applications isn’t a job search strategy.

It’s a way to feel busy while avoiding the 20 direct outreach messages that would actually work.

Nobody’s ignoring your resume because it’s not good enough. They’re ignoring it because it looks like everyone else’s.

I reflected on my recent job‑search experiment where I sent a very high volume of generic applications versus a low volume of highly specific ones, and what that taught me about application strategy.

  • applications.generic.count = 300 applications.generic.responses = 0
  • applications.specific.count = 10

I observed that sending 300 generic remote job applications yielded no replies – “Applying to 300 remote jobs and hearing nothing isn’t bad luck.” – while the same market sees candidates who submit only 10 targeted applications getting better traction, as the quote notes: “It’s 300 generic applications competing with people who sent 10 specific ones.”
