In a later thread on 2026‑10‑13 I expanded on why speed alone is not enough for a durable startup and laid out the four compounding advantages that truly matter.
But a company that has to sprint forever is not a good business.
Brand can become a true moat over time (as with Coke or Nike or Apple)
There are only four compounding advantages that really matter.
Switching costs: The more deeply embedded a product is in the way a customer works, the harder it is for that customer to switch.
Network effects: The more users a product has, the better it gets for everyone.
Scale economies: The more volume a company has, the larger and more efficient its operations can be.
Data effects: The more usage a product has, the more data it generates.
I adopted Dan Hockenmaier’s three‑step evaluation framework – identify the compounding advantage, gauge its potential strength, and measure if it’s already working – and now prioritize offers where at least one of these levers is evident.
In early October 2026 I posted a series of X updates launching the “Hype(less)” research project, announcing a plug‑and‑play “Moat‑Check” AI skill, and clarifying which attributes truly constitute durable competitive moats.
The Hype(less) project asks PMs, engineers and designers to submit their most valuable AI workflow via a Google Form by 2026‑10‑23.
The Moat‑Check skill is publicly accessible at https://t.co/amx1RTf5XU.
A detailed PDF guide for the Moat‑Check skill is available at https://t.co/kbxEnO5fzU.

- Switching Costs – deep product integration that raises the cost for customers to move to competitors.
- Distribution – not a moat.
- “Unlearning” rate – the ability to discard outdated models quickly.
These initiatives build on the themes I explored in linkedin october 2026 posts and labs mindset october 2026, extending my focus on durable moats and high‑value skills.
- Explosive endurance – sustained high‑intensity output over time.
- Execution – not a moat.
- Brand – not a moat.
- Network Effects – value increases as more users join the platform.
- Data Advantages – proprietary data that improves product performance and is hard to replicate.
- Platform Lock‑in – ecosystem dependencies that keep users within a suite of services.
