I posted on X on 20 October 2026 about the rise, fall, and nascent revival of India’s ship‑building industry, contrasting its 18th‑century dominance with today’s near‑absence and a possible new interest from Maersk.

The Bombay shipyard was founded in **1736** by **Lovji Nusserwanjee Wadia**, a Parsi master‑builder from Surat.

Over the next century the Wadia family built **dozens of Indiamen and warships**, making the yard one of the world’s best.

After that golden era, India’s ship‑building capacity fell to **practically no ship building Industry** until a recent, still‑nascent revival.

Maersk, the world’s **second‑largest container line**, historically sources most new‑builds from China, Singapore, and the Gulf, and may now consider Indian yards again.

I framed the story as a contrast between historic greatness and automatic decay, stressing that without active effort any revival could slip back into decline.

Open questions include which specific projects signal the revival, which Indian shipyards could receive Maersk’s future orders, and how Indian capacity stacks up against China, Singapore, and the Gulf.

> India went from having the world’s best ships built here to practically no ship building Industry until its recent and nascent revival.
