# Maintenance Effort Versus Forward Progress

I often think about how most of my daily effort is spent not on advancing but on simply holding my current position.

So a lot of the effort we put in every day isn't even about getting ahead. It's just to hold our position.

When I ask myself whether I’m truly progressing, I picture rowing in a river where the current matches my rowing speed – I stay stationary relative to the shore while the water flows past me.

And if you want to move forward, you have to row harder than the water is pushing.

These observations lead me to a self‑assessment question: Am I merely keeping my place, or am I rowing harder than the current?
