# Ikea Humble Mail Order Origins

I reflect on IKEA’s start as a tiny mail‑order shop that later grew into a global furniture giant.

I founded IKEA in 1943 when I was 17 years old.

The early catalogue sold pens, wallets, watches, nylon stockings and Christmas cards.

Orders came by post, and his family packed them in the evenings.

A milk truck passing the farm carried IKEA’s parcels to the post office.

In 1948 I started selling furniture, and it took off.

Established retailers pressured suppliers to stop selling to IKEA, threatening to boycott anyone who worked with the company.

So it began designing its own furniture.
