I released HarnessRouter as an open‑source server that implements the Unified Harness Protocol. The router cleanly separates the API surface (Gateway), isolated execution (Runner), and auxiliary services (Built‑in tools) so that any harness can be swapped without touching product code.

- HarnessRouter.components = Gateway, Runner, Built‑in tools

HarnessRouter.benchmark_cost_reduction = 2.1×

HarnessRouter.credit_reduction = 53 % fewer credits

On 2026‑10‑16 I announced the Unified Harness Protocol (UHP), a standardized interface for running agent tasks across any agent harness, regardless of which one you use.

UHP (Unified Harness Protocol) is a standardized interface for running agent tasks across any agent harness, regardless of which one you use.

HarnessRouter is its open-source server implementation.

The workflow I described routes a product backend's task + harness_id to HarnessRouter, which then forwards the request to the configured harness, streams progress and artifacts back, and finally returns the output to the product.

In HarnessRouter's first controlled benchmark, changing only the harness reduced cost by up to 2.1×, with the cheaper setup using roughly 53 % fewer credits on the same model.

Alibaba Cloud's Qoder has already officially adopted UHP, making it available as an agent backend through the HarnessRouter API.

I decided to adopt a unified protocol to decouple product logic from specific harness implementations, reducing maintenance overhead and enabling easy experimentation across harnesses.
