# University Endowments And Institutional Investing

I have described Harvard’s endowment and its investment management, then offered a deliberately speculative theory about how scholarships and student competition might contribute to institutional influence. I cautioned readers that this was only “half theory,” not an established finding.

I said Harvard’s endowment is $53.2 billion, the largest of any university in the world; this was the figure and ranking in my September 13, 2025 post, not an independently verified update.

I said Harvard Management Company (HMC) manages the endowment and operates almost like a professional investment firm.

I described HMC as allocating capital across venture capital, private equity, hedge funds, real estate, public equities, and bonds.

I speculated that scholarship funding might matter more to Harvard’s influence than investments in companies because scholarships could bring in students with potential to become billionaires or otherwise powerful people. I compared the intensely competitive student environment to The Hunger Games and theorized that trauma and insecurity might increase some students’ likelihood of outstanding achievement. I called the model sadistic but “genius” and wondered whether Harvard plays a larger part in major historical events than people think. I supplied no sources or evidence for these causal claims, and urged readers to do their own research and stay informed.
