# Reconciliation Trust Issue

I remind myself: Never treat “Pending” as “Failed.” This keeps payment status clear and avoids double‑charge confrontations.

I observed a Rapido ride on 2026‑10‑05 where a UPI payment failed in the app, the rider paid cash, and the original UPI transaction later succeeded, resulting in a duplicate charge. This highlighted a trust issue in our payment reconciliation flow.

Decision: I will not treat “Pending” as “Failed” because it prevents duplicate payments and preserves rider trust.

North Star Metric: I will track Fare Collection Rate – the percentage of rides where the fare is successfully collected.

Example outcome: The rider paid ₹127 cash, then the original UPI transaction succeeded an hour later, so the rider was charged ₹254 for a ₹127 ride.

I propose a Payment Recovery Flow with four states – Pending (wait & reconcile), Failed (retry or offer alternate method), Unknown (reconcile before proceeding), and a risk‑based routing for unrecovered fares that shifts responsibility from captains to the platform.
