Jerry terHorst served as White House press secretary for 31 days (August 1974 – Sept 8 1974).
His 31‑day tenure was the shortest on record for 52 years, until it was broken in October 2026.
TerHorst quit on the same day President Ford pardoned Nixon (Sept 8 1974) after learning he could not defend the decision.
He ran the Detroit News bureau in Washington and had covered Gerald Ford since 1948.
Jerry terHorst lived until 2010.
Katie Zacharia served as White House press secretary for 5 days (Oct 17 2026 – ≈Oct 22 2026), breaking terHorst’s record.
Zacharia was fired after an announcement on Oct 17 2026 following media focus on her false legal credentials.
She claimed to be a lawyer, citing a bar admission “when I moved to China,” but no California bar record exists and she made at least 18 TV appearances claiming lawyer status.
Zacharia worked at Zhong Lun from 2011 to 2013.
Both terHorst and Zacharia faced credibility crises that led to their departures.
I posted these anecdotes on X in October 2026 as part of my broader “X October 2026 Posts” series (see x october 2026 posts part3).
These records illustrate how brief tenures can become historical milestones when credibility issues surface.
The data also raise open questions about how the White House verifies credential claims for its spokespersons.
