I documented the rise and collapse of Foursquare between 2020 and 2026, covering its growth, financing, layoffs, acquisition, and the total loss of equity for employees and investors.

About 1,600 people worked at Foursquare over 17 years.

It turned all that location data into a business selling to advertisers and did more than $100M in revenue in 2019.

That same year a merchant bank called The Raine Group led a $150M investment, and PitchBook valued the company at $450M.

Foursquare raised about $412M in debt and equity over its life.

In 2024 the company laid off 105 people, roughly a quarter of the staff.

Every share of preferred stock was "cancelled and extinguished" with no payment; common stock got the same treatment.

Current employees sat through an in‑person all‑hands and then heard their equity was worthless in an email from the legal team.

Former employees got a Carta notification pointing them to a 125‑page PDF.

Infillion's press release lists 16 billion check‑ins among what it bought.
